Here we have 40012 departing Penmaenmawr working the daily St Helens ballast on September 19th 1979. For those of you that don't know it was Penmaenmawr resident Ron Watson-Jones who was responsible for painting the names on the original named members of the class. It was done during layover whilst working Penmaenmawr balllast services during the late 70's-early 80's with at least one being so treated on Bangor station during a turn around on a Manchester diagram. Ron struck up friendships with a number of the Traincrew of the time and staged several interesting things as a result. Here is one of them, 40012 carries Ron's Irish Mail headboard (more often seen on class 40's working The Coast in the early 80's). The notes on the image tell me it is "Ozi" waving out of the Secondman's window - perhaps somebody out there knows him...? The headboard would be carried as far as "Metal Bridge" at Dwygyfylchi a mile or so out of Penmaenmawr where it would be returned to Ron.... Imagine trying to do this today.....! Anyway, here is the working having just left Penmaenmawr Quarry loading sidings taken by Ron and reproduced with permission. Permission to use this pictures was obtained from Steve Morris.
40012 is seen on the outskirts of Holyhead working a Manchester service on June 3rd 1981. This image would be the subject of a painting by Ian Walmsley, commissioned for my 30th birthday. Prints of this were then produced for sale - some of you may well have one.... photo by Steve Morris. Permission to use this pictures was obtained from Steve Morris.
An image that could only have been recorded by Penmaenmawr's Ron Watson-Jones! Here is Departmental 97407 ex 40012 viewed from the Penmaenmawr quarry unloading gantry with it's train waiting to be loaded with ballast. It is August 13th 1985, a few months following reinstatement to traffic on May 20th. Photo by Ron Watson-Jones with permission.

Another great image recorded by Ron Watson-Jones... A "tarted up" 97407 is seen pulling out of Penmaenmawr quarry loading sidings with another load of ballast destined for the North West.... March 17th 1986. Reproduced with permission.

ELR class 40 Anniversary Special, what a fantastic event
Six class 40’s in one place at the same time, first time this has happened since 1985
The crowds liked it, the train crew’s liked it, and the railway liked it what more can you say. . The CFPS / ELR organizers really pull-out all the stops here and put on a superb event enjoyed by everybody, but that’s certainly going to a hard one to follow lads. In fact, I’m going to put my neck on the line here and say that’s one of the best events ever.
The Class 40 Appeal would like to thank the ELR / CFPS for inviting us to the event and hope everyone enjoyed the sight and sounds of 40012 hauling trains once again. This was the first time the loco had been out since 1994 and she really did us all proud, got rid of a few cob-webs and performed faultlessly through the three day event.
You will now all be pleased to know Aureol is now staying on at the railway till at least September and will be hauling a variety of service on the line thought out that period. More information and dates when 40012 is out working can be obtained from Class 40 Preservation Society at www.cfps.co.uk
We are extremely grateful to everyone who worked on Aureol to make sure the loco attended this event, especially the Andania lads from Barrow Hill for all their hard work and determination to get the loco finished in time. Without their help the loco would have properly just appeared has a static exhibit only.
If anyone would like to make a donation towards the up-keep of 40012 we would really appreciate it. The four turbo’s need overhauling to start with at a cost of £8,000 and the list seems to be endless. I’ve spent the last thirty odd years trying to raise money and believe me it’s not easy. Still the only way to keep this “Beast” running for now and future generations to enjoy is by sheer hard work and determination to succeed and financial support from all those interested in class 40’s.
We done our best to give everyone the opportunity to ride behind Aureol and take loads of pictures, now it’s your turn to give Aureol something back in return. Anyone interested in making a donation to 40012 can do so through our Pay-Pal account by logging onto our web site at aureol.weebly.com
